Exhibiting in January at the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery - "Fragile: Handle With Care"
Through photography, print-making, painting, ceramics, mixed media and installations, the artists chosen address a variety of concerns, including the mysterious population decline of honey bees and monarch butterflies, the introduction of aggressive species that have no natural enemies to the detriment of native plants, the effects on the land of clear cutting and other deforestation practices, and the accumulation of thrown-away plastic articles in ocean currents, much of which ends up in the bodies of fish.
The participating artists are Vicky Colombet, Joseph Esser, Tamiko Kawata, Puneeta Mittal, Maureen Palmieri, Pat Pickett, Winn Rae, Barbara Roux, Lorena Salcedo Watson and Tom Steele. While the majority of the artists’ works focus on the world of living organisms, Mr. Steele draws attention to the built landscape. His small photographs of sheds and other abandoned buildings on the East End ask whether we are really making progress when we tear down these once useful buildings to make room for another strip mall or housing development.
The opening reception will take place Sunday, January 17 3pm-5pm in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery.
