An Exhibition Tracing the Development of an Artwork

The first stage in creating a work of art is the idea. Next comes deciding how to realize it. While there are many steps in the development of a painting, only the last one—the finished product—is visible. In a mixed media work, however, the process—the steps along the way—can be seen in the finished product. In other words, “What you see is how it got there.” This exhibition invites the viewer to witness the individual processes of eight very different artists.

One artist uses cut and folded paper to make patterns, while another uses fragments of handmade paper of different textures to create low reliefs on the wall. Two other artists create finely balanced sculptures-- one with different forms of metal, the other with concrete and wax. Two other artists deal in mystery-- one with messages attached to pins and the other with photogravures, which, when looked at closely reveal previously collaged images. The two remaining artists use found materials to produce witty sculptures or intriguing shadows on the wall, respectively.

The artists in this exhibit are Jaq Belcher, David Corn, Beth Dary, Elizabeth Duffy, Beth Ganz, Tamiko Kawata, Karen Shaw and Hilda Shen.
